Book launch at celebration of 125 years of peace and justice in The Hague

At a celebration of 125 years of peace and justice in The Hague, I presented my new book ‘The dream of The Hague’ in the Peace Palace today.

In May 1899 – exactly 125 years ago – the First Hague Peace Conference was opened in The Hague. At the occasion of the 125 year anniversary, the Peace Palace Library in collaboration with the municipality of The Hague organised a commemoration event in the Peace Palace.

Following introductory remarks by the Secretary General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Marcin Czepelak, I gave a lecture on the relevance of the dream of The Hague for the world today. I presented the first copy of the book to the mayor of The Hague, Jan van Zanen.

In a discussion moderated by journalist Tjitske Lingsma, the Director of PAX, Rolien Sasse, Ambassador Paul van den IJssel and Eric de Brabandere, Professor of International Dispute Settlement Law and Director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, spoke about multilateralism and international law in the 20th and 21st century.
